Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis show the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism left him speechless and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
