Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
