Our Premier Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

Initially, this work might appear closer to an arduous scholarly challenge than the latest pop project by an artist who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Divided across 4 different movements and sung in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking symphonic album investigating feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, often by way of the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking feels almost miraculous, with sole credit going to the artist. While it's not the first time album to blend the past and the present, its scale are far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more pronounced. What really raises this fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic Björk during her height, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart apart, the listener still desire to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy comes forth brightly during the stirring piano-led song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several moments. Suddenly, everything falls away, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes down like comedic force. The song then shifts to the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album is that you rarely quite know—nor wish to predict—what you will go to next."

Almost each track concludes in a completely different place than how it started. A track explores the transient trappings of fame over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Art & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album involves straddling the gap of bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in English swells around a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This trick gets repeated on another expansive track that expands and contracts, weaving multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture impact of other breakup songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but never feels like hard work. Where other major releases of the year felt like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous feast where the guests around it, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about hopeless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly creative visionary.
