Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
