Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.

Aviation Problems

The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.

Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Regional Consequences

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
